Boat cushion maintenance

Written by The Foam Factory

Boat cushions and mattresses require just as much maintenance as the cushions we have at home. In fact, keeping them in good shape requires more attention. Passengers bring dirt and other debris in addition to what the sea spray. Here are some steps you can take to keep your yacht cushions looking good:

If you have not done so already, replace the existing cushions with those that are formulated for marine use. The formulated cushions can resist microbial growth. Also, consider using vinyl or weather resistant covers.

You will need to follow this process each time you use the boat:

The first step is to remove any loose debris and grit. You can use a cloth or dustpan for this purpose. Removing grit and any dirt is the most basic maintenance you can, especially if the boat is going to be going out again immediately after.

The next step requires a bit more downtime for the boat. Using tepid water, a cloth and detergent, wash the outside of the cushions. Depending on the severity of the dirt, you might need to do several passes.

Finally, rinse the cushions with fresh water and leave it to dry. It is important that the cushions dry completely before next use.

During down time, store the cushions in a waterproof and air tight cover. This will add years to your cushions.
